What is Hip Dip Fat Transfer?

While an hourglass shape of the female waist line has always been a marker of beauty, there are normal variation of the fat distribution around the hips and some women have a particularly hollow region around the trochanter (a deep part of your hip bone) this is described as the hip dip.

The hip dip disturbs the streamlined, half-circle profile that curves out at the hip then curving back to the thighs, due to the strong attachment of the skin to the trochanteric area.

There are multiple options for patients desiring to reduce the hip dips from using your own fat cells to lift up this area, or to use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) dermal fillers like Hyacorp to fill this area. The use of fillers like Radiesse, Sculptra or Lanluma is also described for this area; finally Silicone implants have also been designed for this area, but need to be inserted under general anesthesia, while all the other options can be offered under local anesthesia.

The best treatment is Lipomodelling with fat transfer.

Does fat transfer to hip dips hurt?

The treatment is done under local anesthesia and is not particularly painful, there is a feeling of tightness and discomfort following the treatment, which can be managed with oral pain relief and starts easing after the 4th day onwards.

While in most patients one transfer is enough, some patient might experience a poor survival of the transferred fat cells and need another treatment, to stabilise the results of fat transfer.

While you will see an immediate improvement post op, there is an element of swelling that is present this slowly resolves over weeks to months, so we always advise our patients to wait for 3 – 6 months before evaluating the results.

You can certainly try the following exercises to build up the gluteal complex muscles (Gluteus Maximus, Medius and Minimus) and this might reduce the appearance of the hip dips in some patients.

Lunges, Glute bridges, Squats, Hip Thrust and Deadlifts.

Yes given that we have simply relocated your body’s fat from one area to another, it is possible to the grafted fat to behave in the same way as the rest of the body, increasing in size with weight gain and losing volume with weight loss. We therefore advise our patients to keep a steady body weight.
