1. What exactly are hip dips, and can exercise fix them?

Hip dips are natural indentations on the outer thigh, below the hip bone, caused by the underlying structure of the pelvis and the way fat and muscle are distributed in that area. Some women have an exaggerated hollow in this region.

  • ExerciseĀ can build gluteal muscles (like the gluteus medius and minimus), which may reduce theĀ appearanceĀ of the dips for some people, but it typically cannot eliminate them entirely because the underlying cause is the skeletal structure.

The main difference lies in the source material, longevity, and procedure type.

  • Fat transferĀ (a surgical procedure often combined with liposuction) uses your body’s own fat, harvested from another area (e.g., abdomen, thighs), to fill the hip dips. This yields more natural-looking and potentially permanent results as the fat cells “take” to the new location. At Reforme we have the ability to monitor the treatment with Ultrasound to ensure safety.
  • Dermal fillersĀ (a non-surgical procedure) use injectable substances, like hyaluronic acid (HA) or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) fillers (e.g.,Ā Lanluma,Ā Sculptra), to add volume to the area. Fillers generally need to be topped up at yearly intervals till stable volume is achieved, after this time you can expect a stable result for longer than 1 – 2 years.
  • Fat transfer provides the most long-lasting, potentially permanent, results. While some initial fat is reabsorbed by the body, the fat that survives the transfer (typically 50-70%) can last a lifetime, though significant weight changes can affect the shape. Some patients made need a second fat transfer treatment at about an year to give stable longer results, if not enough of the transferred fat survives after the first treatment.
  • Dermal fillersĀ offer temporary results, often lasting between one to five years, and require top-up treatments to sustain the desired volume. Latest evidence suggests that dermal fillers can deliver long term results especially with the newer molecules.
  • Dermal fillersĀ involve minimal downtime. Patients may experience some redness, swelling, or bruising for up to a week but can usually resume normal activities quickly.
  • Fat transferĀ is a surgical procedure with a longer recovery time. Bruising and swelling can last for a few weeks, and most people need to take one to two weeks off work. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for about four weeks, and specific sleeping positions (e.g., avoiding pressure on the treated area) may be necessary for several weeks. Full results are visible after several months.
  • Fat transferĀ is a surgical procedure, so it carries the standard risks associated with minor surgery and anaesthesia. A key disadvantage is that not all transferred fat cells may survive, potentially requiring a second session. The results are not easily reversible if a patient is unsatisfied with the outcome.
  • Dermal fillersĀ are less invasive and carry risks like bruising, swelling, or infection. While considered safe in appropriate volumes, using a large amount of filler in non-standard areas like the hips can increase safety risks, such as lumps, asymmetry, or vascular complications. A key advantage is that most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) if needed.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fat transfer to hip dips hurt?

The treatment is done under local anesthesia and is not particularly painful, there is a feeling of tightness and discomfort following the treatment, which can be managed with oral pain relief and starts easing after the 4th day onwards.

While in most patients one transfer is enough, some patient might experience a poor survival of the transferred fat cells and need another treatment, to stabilise the results of fat transfer.

While you will see an immediate improvement post op, there is an element of swelling that is present this slowly resolves over weeks to months, so we always advise our patients to wait for 3 – 6 months before evaluating the results.

You can certainly try the following exercises to build up the gluteal complex muscles (Gluteus Maximus, Medius and Minimus) and this might reduce the appearance of the hip dips in some patients.

Lunges, Glute bridges, Squats, Hip Thrust and Deadlifts.

Yes given that we have simply relocated your body’s fat from one area to another, it is possible to the grafted fat to behave in the same way as the rest of the body, increasing in size with weight gain and losing volume with weight loss. We therefore advise our patients to keep a steady body weight.
